Green sea turtle and blue tangs | 76cm x 76cm | Oil onto deep-frame stretched canvas
In this painting: A youngish green sea turtle swims by very close to the ocean surface. From the calm ripples one can sense the moving contours, almost like staccato notes. One blue tang swims just above the carapace while a few are deeper which means their characteristics are more influences by the ripples. The water colour is typical of a clean sunny day. I applied swift marks in an impressionist style that is a type of relaxed broken colour technique for a true sense of movement in the scene.

Here I experimented with painting on a Slammers bodysurf hand board beautifully crafted by Aslam Fakir. I had a suspicion it could work as painting oils onto wood is by no means a new practice. Perhaps we will do some more.

In this painting: So, at the exhibition opening a gentleman (I found out to be a marine biologist) informed me that I combined warm and cold water jellyfish. This was after I proudly informed him that I used references from uShaka and Two Oceans. I was delighted that he pointed this out and that he ended up buying the painting – I won't make that mistake again :)
